When using Jrg's cdrecord 2.0 I even triggered a kernelbug so I'll be bold and post relevant information about what I did and about what I use. I hope it isn't too much, and if it needs to be something else, please let me know.
The drive is not mentioned on any lists I have seen, but only in the kernel and then as EXPERIMENTAL, which it has been as long as I can remember.
Thanks,
Peter

Hello there,

First, I am not on this list as I am not sure how and if I can get itYou can subscribe very easily, look at the linux-usb page which is
http://www.linux-usb.org
I am the owner of a HP8230e USB CDRW drive that I have not been successful in getting to work with Linux.[snip]
Attempting to use Mr.J?rgs latest cdrtools (mkisofs, cdrecord) I wasn't successful and talking directly to J?rg he had less than kind words to say about Linux and the USB support here :-)The less said about Mr.J?rg's less than kind words, the better.
Before using cdrecord you need to get the drive recognised as a SCSI
device. Read the documentation in the linux-usb site, if you can
compile a kernel you can probably get a USB drive going. Your drive
will probably appear as /dev/sda0 or something like that.
When you've done that read the CD-Writing HOWTO, it's at
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html
It will take you through the rest of it (mkiofs, cdrecord) step by
step. It does work (I burned 3 CDs yesterday:).
So, could anyone here tell me about the possibility to use that drive with Linux? Success- and failure stories?I don't have that drive, but if it's marked as ok in the working
devices list I'd say your chances are pretty good, especially with
that 2.5 kernel.
My only wish is to use it to store files and data for backup, possibly multisession on CD-R, but even that isn't a must and I have no special desire to use it for music CD copying in case that makes it easier.Once you have it recognised you can do wahtever you like.

Ged.
