        USB FileSystem support is nothing to do with usb-storage support.
That is a separate module. The USB FileSystem is what you see under
/proc/bus/usb (normally, but you can mount it anywhere). So you also need
usb-storage. You should probably buy a device that has the USB2 logo on it
(you'll see information on the web site about USB2) as this will mean it
has passed some tests to make sure it is a standard device. Some others
will work but you'd need to check them individually on the Working Device
List. BTW, SCSI support should be a set of modules, you'll need the basic
SCSI subsystem and at least disk and generic support.
