I have been struggling to use a USB DVD-R/RW. The manufacturer is
Melco (aka Buffalo) and the model is DVR-21U2. The actual drive
is a Toshiba IDE DVD-R/RW. Melco packages it in a case with a
Melco USB2-IDE Bridge.

I thought I had solved the problem by recompiling the kernel with
static SCSI and USB modules. While this was stable across reboots,
subsequent compiles with the same options did not allow me to mount
the drive.

I finally made some guesses for an unusual_dev.h entry and reverted
to using kernel modules. I can not mount and read the entire drive.

Here is my patch to unusual_dev.h:

UNUSUAL_DEV( 0x0411, 0x0028, 0x0100, 0x0200,
                "MELCO INC.",
                "MELCO INC. USB2-IDE Bridge",
                US_SC_SCSI, US_PR_BULK, NULL,
                US_FL_FIX_INQUIRY | US_FL_MODE_XLATE),

I am not sure about how to find appropriate bcdDeviceMin and bcdDeviceMax
values, so I guessed at the following. Without the US_FL_FIX_INQUIRY
flag, garbage appears for this device in /proc/scsi/scsi and /dev/sda
is not recognized as a block device. Without US_FL_MODE_XLATE, modprobe
sd_mod hangs.

If anyone can advise on a more accurate way to find the bcdDeviceMin
and bcdDeviceMax values, I will be happy to test. Also, is patching
unusual_dev.h the best way to add support for this device? Or is there
something else that can be done?

Here is the relevant portion of /proc/bus/usb/devices:
