I just built 2.5.73 and tried it.

The results are a little better but still not quite right.

The best part is it doesn't seem to hang the machine anymore. I'm able to
mount and unmount okay.

I still see a lot of error messages in the console window, along the
lines of the ones I was getting with 2.4. I compiled with usb-storage
verbose debug messages, so I'm getting a ton of information in syslog.

Interestingly, it does report:

----
usb-storage: Vendor: Frontier Labs
usb-storage: Product: Nex II Digital
usb-storage: This device (0451,5409) has unneeded SubClass and Protocol entries in
unusual_devs.h

So I'm sending that message now!

The main problem seems to be it sometimes mounts read-only. To sync the
device, I had to keep unmounting and remounting it, and I was finally
able to get it work. I didn't change anything between the mounting and
unmounting, so it's acting inconsistently.

I've posted about 4M of syslog from just a few minutes of activity here:

http://bostoncoop.net/adam/temp/kernel-log-2.5

(USB messages grepped out of syslog for the period the device was
mounted).
