Help,
I am not able to get USB 2.0 under Linux (RH7.2 &2.4.21.pre6 kernel) to work with an external hard drive, consistently . After rebooting several times, un-plugging, and re-plugging the external USB drive and the stars aligning, I can access the external drive, but that wears me out. It's not consistent.
This is a IBM T23 Thinkpad with a BusLink USB 2.0 Cardbus and an In-System Design (ISD) external box containing an IBM 120 GB hard drive, split into a fat and a linux partition.
The ISD always shows up in /proc/bus/usb/devices, which is shown below. But when I try to mount the partitions, results vary. Sometimes it works, but other times the system hangs or I get the following:
mount /mnt/usbWin1 => mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device
mount /mnt/usbLin1 => mount: /dev/sda5 is not a valid block device
/sbin/fdisk /dev/sda may respond correctly, hang, or say “unable to read /dev/sda”
Any would be greatly appreciated.!
