Hi list!
This is my first here, treat me like a newbie but nicely, please.
I had to pass _nousb_ at install parameter for installing RedHat 9.0, kernel
2.4.20-8 on a Compaq Presario 1210us. No other params worked on this laptop
preconfigured for WinME, indeed, works well with everything on this system,
and under the subsequently upgrade to XP. USB works under MSDOS even!!!! Not
yet tried on FreeDOS.
WinXP said is a VIA Rev 5 USB hub. WinME too. Back to Linux...
I sucessfully pass nousb automatically at LILO _append_ option.
Cumputer hangs without it, after these all USB-related lines:
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 17:33:52 Mar 13 2003
usb-uhci.c: Highbandwidth mode enabled
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0x1800, IRQ 5
usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus nimber 1

What I am trying to help to work on USB under Linux is an Intel Camera and a
USB 2.5' 40Gb Hitachi HD builded by me with a case-adaptor, Self-USB-or-PS2
powered. Great and CHEAP!!! option
RedHats USB UHCI is correct, after checking I/O and IRQ under XP. and 2
ports are OK.
Reading this list among other options I figured that I needed to install
following modules:
usbcore
scsi-mod
usbstorage
uhci or usb-uhci or ohci or whatsoever
first three worked well with modprobe and insmod
uhci, ohci and usb-uhci not...
Am I on the right path?
What do I need to do next?
On this not-so-young machine (Duron 850Ghz) I needed to compile two extra
modules to work with the NIC, the well known tulip and its pciscan. And this
machine does not work with the PCMCIA, althout I dont required it (Texas
Instrument by the way) I know the workaround for this.
The last step I need to get rid of Win is that Linux works with the USB hub
and ACPI (is there a list for this?)
Already readed a lot of junk on the Internet, but nothing seems to work...
:((
Nowhere found usb-uhci sources!!! Need help Where-How to compile it.
RedHat helped Not, even for an old RedHat user like me. I don't care if I
need to return their 3 fat CDs and change for another distro, would be nice.
Compaq is sooo busy with RH7 on their servers...
BIOS Phoenix 4.0 ver 7, had nothing to configure but boot order and
passwords. Although Phoenix claims to have USB boot options!!! Compaqs
fault I guess
Don't care if I cannot access USB 2.0, I need those files under Linux,
simply.
Proyect is to configure a syslinux _on diskette at least_ to boot off the
Usb hd wherever I go... I know it works, but I need to start in my heavy
laptop.
Sorry for the LONG mail!
Frank
