Upgrade the kernel.

Yes, but you need one of those three.

You need to find which is needed for your PC, either uhci or ohci.
If it's uhci you can try either uhci or usb-uhci.

They're in the kernel source tree, they get compiled if you choose the
right options when you configure your kernel.

Optimistic.  The hardware will be different wherever you go, so the
kernel might not support it properly, or there may be bugs.  But don't
let me stop you, it's worth a try...
