I bought a usb-ide box (because it was cheap), and now I'm trying to get
it to work, but with no success so far.

Here is what I get when I first load the usb-uhci

usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 15:47:27 Dec 13 2002
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:01.2
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xd800, IRQ 11
usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
hub.c: USB hub found
hub.c: 2 ports detected
usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver

and then I plug the box in:

hub.c: new USB device 00:01.2-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x55aa/0x1234) is not claimed by any active driver.
SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage
usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 1507
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices

cat /proc/scsi/scsi says:
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: Model: Rev:
Type: <NULL> ANSI SCSI revision: ffffffff

So it doesn't work, but almost does. :-)

Let's see the PCB in the box:

The main chip is: (C)OnSpecInc.
                  USBIX-90C36
                  0040
                  A010

There is another chip that says: SB61L256BS-8
                                 JC2009105000
                                     2032

There area couple of small chips, resistors, etc. I can give more precise
desciption if needed. Printed on the board reads: USBA Rev:1.0
And then there are two jumpers: J1 with 3 spikes and J5 with 2. There are
no jumpers connecting any of them. I wonder could that cause problems...

And some info about the box itself: It has metal case, a power supply on
the right side and a fan in the back. There is almost no writing or logos
in the box. What I can find is: "HI-POT TEST OK" and
"QC PASS SEP 6. 01" on a sticker and then "NO:B649796", "MADE IN TAIWAN".

There is a driver cd, but it's pretty much useless: No readme, no website
addresses, only a couple of .dlls and .infs and some file that is probably
the mac driver.

Ok. Let's try the box again. In the previous test (above) I had an old
Mitsumi cdrom drive jumpered as cable select in the box. I connect a 100
MB NEC hard drive jumpered as master and try again:

hub.c: new USB device 00:01.2-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x3e8/0x15) is not claimed by any active driver.

Notice that the vendor/product numbers are now different than before. And
usb-storage finds nothing.

And then the third test, this time without any drive connected:

hub.c: new USB device 00:01.2-1, assigned address 3
usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x3e8/0x15) is not claimed by any active driver.

Does anybody have any idea how to make this box work?
