I'm wondering if someone might be able to give me a hand. I've googled and searched the archives to no end on this one, drawing blanks so far.
I'm trying to use a Brother HL-5050 printer with a parallel->usb cable which I had lying around (so I don't have to buy a usb cable for it). Note that under Windows this works fine, so the printer and cable are ok. The printer is known to work under Linux (it's a real PostScript printer).
My machine is a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop running a stock RedHat 8.0 kernel (2.4.18-14).
The cable is one of those uss720 devices, and it seems to be perfectly recognized by the usb subsystem. From lsusb I get:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 047e:1001 Lucent Microelectronics USS720 Parallel Port
Furthermore, it seems to be correctly creating the proper parport:
[ppd]> cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport1/autoprobe CLASS:PRINTER; MODEL:HL-5050 series; MANUFACTURER:Brother; COMMAND SET:PJL,PCL,PCLXL,POSTSCRIPT;
So the printer is even seen by the system!
I have CUPS running, and I added the printer using the KDE add-printer wizard. It correctly showed the HL-5050 as recognized on /dev/lp1 (I have an Epson 820 on /dev/lp0, with an old-style real parallel cable, and that one works fine).
But I can't get anything to print out of the Brother! I send test pages, they all say 'test page successfully sent...', but nothing ever comes out of the printer. All print jobs are accepted, but they just sit on the print queue for ever (even simple one page text tests).
CUPS is working fine, since I can print to the Epson (on /dev/lp0) without any problems.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this.
Regards,
Fernando.
