But I can't get anything to print out of the Brother! I send test pages, they all say 'test page successfully sent...', but nothing ever comes out of the printer. All print jobs are accepted, but they just sit on the print queue for ever (even simple one page text tests).

Here's a bit more info. I started checking the console while testing, and saw the following after sending it a print job (pulled later from /var/log/messages):

Aug 24 01:01:43 maqroll kernel: lp0: ECP mode
Aug 24 01:02:03 maqroll kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
Aug 24 01:02:03 maqroll kernel: uss720: sendbulk ep 1 buf dcdc7000 len 4096 rlen 0
Aug 24 01:02:14 maqroll kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
Aug 24 01:02:16 maqroll last message repeated 2 times
Aug 24 01:02:16 maqroll kernel: lp0 out of paper
Aug 24 01:02:27 maqroll kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
Aug 24 01:03:03 maqroll last message repeated 6 times
Aug 24 01:03:27 maqroll last message repeated 4 times

So there seems to be a timeout issue which makes the system think the printer is out of paper. I read that timing-sensitive tasks performed over these uss720 cables might not work, as they are very slow. But since the same printer works just fine under Windows (using the same par/usb cable), I figured I could give it a try.

TIA for any help,

Fernando.
