AFAIK - Depends on the chipset in the USB enclosure ( which is different than the drive chipset, and probably not Maxtor) I've had good luck on 2.6.* with enclosures using the Cypress chipset. (Compucable) Check the fine print for the USB chipset vendor, and look for reports..
