I too am experiencing the same problems using the Linux 2.4.22 kernel on a Gigabyte GA7VAXP Ultra motherboard. Where the heck is the setting in the BIOS to choose between APIC and PIC? I'm using the F4 bios, just about to upgrade to the F6 one but I doubt that will enable the feature.
