Hi,

finally I can use the "EasyDisk" USB stick with Linux. Thanks to all who
made suggestions. This is how I (somewhat) fixed it:
Once again I built a 2.4.22 kernel (from kernel.org; most of the time I had
tried 2.4.19 before) with the USB driver and storage stuff compiled as
modules and with the "probe multiple SCSI LUNs" option switched on. I had
missed the latter the last time I compiled the kernel, but I don't know if
this did the trick, though, as the 2.4.19 kernel didn't show any differences
with or without the option activated.

After booting the new kernel and plugging in the USB stick hotplugging still
would not operate correctly but at least I was able to have a look at the
stick with fdisk. This time it displayed four partitions (sda1-4), obviously
with garbage instead of sensible data for heads, cylinders and related
information in the partition table. I deleted all the partitions and created
a single one with partition type FAT 16. Then I did a mkdosfs on that
partition, and bingo:
After replugging the stick the hotplug mechanism created the appropriate
/etc/fstab entry and finally the stick could be mounted and used.

Yet I still can't figure out why I wasn't able to see the (original,
garbled) partitions with the 2.4.19 kernel. And why the stick works with
various flavours of Windows in spite of the garbage in the partition table.
Oh well ...

Cheers
Matthias

  Computers are like air conditions.
They stop working properly when you open Windows.
