(Apologies if this was discussed before on this list - I'm not sub-
scribed, and the search facilities at sf.net are somewhat limited.)

I've run into problems on dual Xeon systems (2.4 GHz) built around
an Intel SE7500CW2 board. The board is equipped with an Intel E7500
chipset. The problems have manifested with a number of RedHat Linux
kernels, and still do so with the most recent 2.4.20-20smp for i686
(kernel-smp-2.4.20-20.7.i686.rpm from the RedHat updates area for 7.3).

They show up when the BIOS option 'Legacy USB support' is set to enabled.
(I need this setting, as the machines do not have internal floppy or
CD-ROM drives, and occasionally they need to be booted from USB devices.)
The kernel boots fine, then init starts to walk through rc.sysinit and
runs a 'modprobe usb-uhci'. In about one out of two cases, this hangs
the machine; only the reset button or larger hammers are able to revive
it. In other cases it works just fine. I've not established any clear
evidence yet what is different between the two cases, but I'm sure I've
seen many hangs when trying to boot the system entirely unattended.

In case it adds useful information, /proc/pci shows two USB hubs
somewhat like
Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM USB (Hub #1) (rev 2).

All hints welcome...

Cheers,

Helge
