I had a lot of problems with 2.4 kernels hanging, crashing, everything
when loading USB modules (and worse when unloading them).  The 2.5 and
2.6 kernels have been much better for me in this regard.  I don't know
if it will help with your particular problem, but I'm sure it's worth
a try.

Failing that, you could try 2.4.22 or later.  When they worked for me
they worked better than anything <=2.4.20, which for USB on my machines
(mostly VIA chipsets) I have found to be perfectly useless.
