I have an ACER Ferrari 3000 laptop which uses an Athlon XP-M 2500+ and a VIA chipset. I'm running Fedora Core 1 straight up with the 2.4.22-1.2115-nptl. It appears as though I'm having intermittent problems with USB devices (mainly just use a mouse, but sometimes my MP3 player--a mass storage device) regardless of XF86Config setup. The problem is not specific to the mouse. Here are the symptoms:
--Mouse occasionally comes up with system boot (maybe 10% of the time). At all other times the mouse does not work at all.
--I try to unplug and replug the mouse into the USB port (sometimes I try the same port sometimes I try others). On occasion (5% of the time?) the mouse will start working, but quit working after just a few seconds. Even rarer (1% of the time?) the mouse will start working and continue working.
--I cat the /proc/bus/usb/devices file frequently and come up with "interesting" scenarios. Acer was gracious to include 4 usb ports on the laptop. Sometimes the mouse shows. Often other strange devices show. Check this out:
--I duel boot (for now, until I get everything working in Linux) XP which never seems to have a problem. Actually, once in a while after XP finishes boot I will have to replug the mouse to get it to work, but this fixes it right away.

I had the mouse plugged in on this one and nothing else. I often see the mass storage device for some reason. I have no idea why that is there. Also, I don't normally see all the usb_hci devices. Here's one where the mouse is showing:

I can't seem to find a rhyhm or reason why it works one time and not another. I did run across a M$ patch for AMD UHCI devices faulting AMD, so I don't know if the same sort of patch needs to be added here or not. It certainly seems like a HW issue because of the inconsistency.
