I now believe your original post less concisely says something very much like: --- Hot unplugging a usb-storage device hangs my read app and sometimes my lk 2.4.9 when using devices such as a /dev/sdb usb fdd but not when using such devices as a /dev/scd0 usb cd. --- I think beyond that you have a question. I think you could remove your app as a variable by also reporting what happens with the alternative, more massively distributed `dd` app, specifically such command lines as: dd if=/dev/sdb bs=512 skip=0 of=/dev/null dd if=/dev/scd0 bs=2048 skip=0 of=/dev/null > 1) > Output of "uname -msr" is: > Linux 2.4.9-e.3 i686 kernel.org tells me lk 2.4.9 is from 2001-08. Now is 2004-01. Although I do not believe trying something more current will actually work much better, I do believe we will get better answers if we try again with something more current. Is burning CD-R already easy for you? Then downloading a "live CD" to boot Linux without install will instantly move you at least as far forward as 2.4.22. I saw that at http://knoppix.net/ in 2003-09. Today the least obsolete 2.4 that kernel.org offers is the 2004-01-05 2.4.24. I have not yet discovered a clearly lk 2.6 live CD, though I lurk at http://gentoo.org/ in hopes of seeing one appear. Kernel version date stamps like 2004-01-08 and 2001-08-16 I fetch from such places as: http://www.kernel.org/ http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/ http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ > Output of "uname -msr" is: > Linux 2.4.9-e.3 i686 Perhaps you prefer to upgrade via mechanisms more like the Red Hat Software Update? I think I've heard that also moves you into the 2.4.twenty's by now. > output of "uname -a" is: > Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.9-e.3 #1 Fri May 3 17:02:43 EDT 2002 > i686 unknown As received here your e-mail was line-broken as shown. You'll need to fix that before you can post kernel patches. A glance at your headers did not identify your e-mail client for me, so I cannot yet offer specific advice how. > 3) > May I please know your view, ...
