No other modules?  I thought there were supposed to be some - or are
they compiled into the kernel?  I have a sneaking feeling that for
experimenting with USB it's better to stick to modules so you can try
to kick things into life by loading and unloading them.  Unfortunately
I've had quite a lot of trouble crashing 2.4 kernels that way, but 2.6
seems a lot better in that respect.  It seems there's been quite a lot
of discussion here lately of mp3 devices.  Don't know if it's directly
related to your problem but you may want to check the archives.
