Are you using USB 2.0 there?

Sorry, as has already been pointed out my question was unclear, so
I've rephrased it and reposted - but it won't make any difference to
your answer. :)

Thanks again.  If you do try A.N.Other Linux and run into any
differences, I'll be pleased to hear about it.
