Ok, I just got hold of a Kingston 1GB USB 2 flash pen - this works just fine 
and gets detected as a USB 2 device.

I am a bit surprised that my USB2 hard drive isn't being detected properly 
considering that it works fine on my home system (which I believe has the 
same controller)
