For now, don't consider changing the error recovery stuff -- that's a 
non-trivial programming job.

As for what went wrong with your device plugged into the other port...  It 
looks like a timing problem.  The usb-storage driver was loaded before the 
device was ready for use.

You can try turning off hotplug support.  Then plug your drive in to the 
computer and 10 or 20 seconds later manually do modprobe usb-storage and 
see how that works.
