I have not made a backup which is sitting in the shelf. Connected
another drive (again a Seagate 200G drive) to the USB-to-IDE box,
bootet linux 2.6.7.

cp -a foo bar lasted about 20 seconds before the first SCSI error was
logged.

What can I do to find out more?
