It's strange that your system hangs in different places depending on which 
controller you're using.

You can get more detailed information by turning on the usb-storage 
debugging option in your kernel configuration.  It will show more 
precisely at what spot the hang occurs.  I don't know if it will provide 
any insight into the _reason_ for the hang...
