I though maybe you would have seen additional log messages on the console
that weren't in the first email, like the messages above (which include
only one of the usb-storage debugging messages).

Do you have your console logging level set sufficiently high?  You can use 
Alt-SysRq-9 to display all the system log messages on the console.
