That logfile contains tons of connection attempts that fail for various different reasons. Most common is that the computer gives up on the drive while the drive is still warming up.
You can try doing this: Make sure the usb-storage module isn't loaded on your system and prevent the hotplug system from loading it. Then plug in the drive and insert a disc. Give it some 15 - 30 seconds to warm up, and then do "modprobe usb-storage".
I tried 5 seconds wait time. That didn't work. 10 and 15 didn't work. 20 seemed to. 30 definitely does.
What makes you ask about an approximate number though? Documentation or a patch?
