One way to capture kernel messages while running X is to get another 
computer and hook up their serial ports with a null-modem cable.  Then 
boot the first computer and use the "console=ttyS0,115200" option on the 
boot command line (substitute the appropriate numbers for the serial port 
you hooked up and the baud rate to use).  Run a terminal emulation program 
like minicom on the other computer; you'll be able to capture everything 
that gets sent to the console.
