This has turned out to be kind of a Heisenbug. Sometimes (probably when the system has been rebooted recently enough), the Camera is recognized fine. I'll run for a few days with the verbose debugging kernel and will see if I can get hold of log entries when the problem shows. So stay tuned, I'll be back.
