1: Compile kernel with the "right stuff" (scsi, usb, usb-storage, usb debug flags,
etc), install and reboot.
2: install Greg K-H's hotplug stuff
kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/hotplug-2004_09_20.tar.bz2
3: fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/thumbdrive vfat defaults,noauto 0 0
4: mkdir /mnt/thumbdrive; touch /mnt/thumbdrive/there.is.no.thumbdrive.mounted.now
5: insert Sandisk Mini
6: df; mount /dev/sda1; df; ls -al /mnt/thumbdrive
( we have different product IDs, I have NO idea whether that is significant;
mine is a 128MB thingie)

and even when I added a new line in /etc/fstab:
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0
and tried test mounting in sda1 (or sda, sdb,sdb1), such as:
#mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstick/
it would not mount and tell me
mount: /dev/sda is not a valid block device
and so forth for the others as well.
So, how did you get it to work?
