You don't need to recompile the entire kernel, just the usb-storage driver. Of course, if you haven't compiled the full kernel already then you will need an initial complete compile. You enable usb-storage debugging by going through the "USB support" menu in "make menuconfig" and then selecting the "USB Mass Storage verbose debug" item. To build just the usb-storage driver, you can type "make SUBDIRS=drivers/usb/storage modules".
