OK, looks like those cases (or chips) are either crap or broken. (I bought two cases altogether)
Today I did some more testing and it turns out that now none of the two cases is working any more, even with WinXP.. :( All I get when I plug it in is a "device not recognized" message and the LED on the case stays on all the time.
So it seems to me they worked for some time (I plugged them into WinXP both the first time, formatted the disks successfully with NTFS, and one of them afterwards I managed to partition and format with vfat on another USB 1.x Linux box) and then fscked up.
I will do some more testing at an internet cafe later (there are some boxen with USB 2.0). And if the results are negative, I will return the cases.
