Recently I purchased a USB 2.0/1.1 case for 2.5" hard disks, and I
don't get it to work under Linux.

No problems with WinXP on both of the boards, device gets recognised
and is fully usable.

The chip inside the case reads:
ALI
M5642 A1
0413 TH05

OK, looks like those cases (or chips) are either crap or broken.
(I bought two cases altogether)

Today I did some more testing and it turns out that now none of the
two cases is working any more, even with WinXP.. :(
All I get when I plug it in is a "device not recognized" message
and the LED on the case stays on all the time.

So it seems to me they worked for some time (I plugged them into
WinXP both the first time, formatted the disks successfully with
NTFS, and one of them afterwards I managed to partition and format
with vfat on another USB 1.x Linux box) and then fscked up.

I will do some more testing at an internet cafe later (there are
some boxen with USB 2.0). And if the results are negative, I will
return the cases.
