There are two things you can try that might help. The first is quite easy: When you plug in the device and things hang up, get a stack trace (Alt-SysRq-T). It may turn out that this works best in single-user mode. Either way, the information listed under the khubd and/or usb-storage processes ought to be interesting. The second thing to try is to turn on the usb-storage verbose debugging option in the kernel configuration. That will produce a lot of additional data in the kernel log when you plug in the device, and the dmesg output for that time interval will be useful.
