different from the other -- as though a different sector was being read.

Maybe there's something strange about the reader embedded in your printer,
like it skips the first few sectors?  If you feel like doing more
experiments with dd and hexdump, maybe you can use the working reader to 
find the sector that the bad reader thinks is the first one.

Or maybe the bad reader is making up fake data for the first sector?  
Whatever is wrong, it seems clear that this is the reader's fault.
