I've been able to successfully set up udev rules to symbolically link the special files created for usb devices to meaningful names, and then refer to those meaningful names elsewhere. That's probably the best approach.
USB is trying to solve a very hard problem (letting people plug random devices in to random places at random times), and it's hard to see how they could have done much better with it. -- Joseph J.
