I had purchased a 2.5" USB2 enclosure from xPCgear.com awhile
back and recently emailed them re their chipsets and got
this response. I'm forwarding to this list because I'm impressed
by Mr. Ho's knowledge of the chipsets and willingness to
communicate with a customer.
I know that after purchasing something in a large store
that I can then attach it to my Linux box and find out what
the chipset is via an usb viewing program, etc., but that's
not as useful as knowing up front what chipset you're buying.
If someone could comment on any of the chipsets mentioned
by Mr. Ho I'd appreciate it.
USB2: ALI chipset
USB2/Firewire: Prolific chipset
Firewire: 911
Firewire 800: Oxford 922
I also need a recommended PCI USB2 controller card recommendation
that uses a known good USB2 host controller chipset.
Lost another 15 man hours on this problem since Thursday.

about the situation. What I can probably tell you out right is that almost
all of our 3.5" USB 2.0 only enclosure uses the ALI chipset and the combo
(USB/Firewire) uses the Prolific chipset. The Firewire only enclosure uses
Oxford 911 chipset and any Firewire 800 enclosure uses Oxford 922 chipset.
The most stable 3.5" enclosure platform so far is the Prolific chipset combo
enclosure, but if you use the firewire connectivity, you may experience drop
connection (a chipset problem probably. But if you need only about 80GB or
so, I would recommend the UE201 enclosure
(http://www.xpcgear.com/ue201.html, use laptop 2.5" hard drive). Not sure
about 12GB but I had transfer 5GB (1 big file) of data to it and it trasnfer
without any problem. Have you look into firewire solution? Since according
to specification, firewire seems to have better data path and transfer and
use less computer resources, where as USB use more CPU cycle and computer

usb2 ide enclosures tend to break
under both Windows and Linux when
used to push hundreds of G of files
around. I gather that some USB2-IDE
chipsets are within spec and work fine,
others (quite a few) are not to spec
and tend to crash and trash the file system when pushed hard.
The problem can also be in a mobo host controller, with problems often going
away by using a PCI card usb2 host controller that utilizes a specific
chipset.
Do you have any technicians that can recommend card/enclosure because they
know the chipset within?
FYI, I'm fighting this with a nvidia nforce2 mobo usb2 host controller and
an expensive thermaltake silverriver 5.25" usb2 external enclosure.
