My computer runs Linux Mandrake 8.2 and my father's computer runs Windows 98. Both computers are (physically) connected with a USB host-to-host cable. I'd like to make the connection work, in order to 1)share a printer that's attached to his computer; 2)share his Internet connection (which is a cable connection, much faster than my dial-up connection). I've been trying to solve this problem for months, so far without any results.
On the Linux side, I think the connection is functional, because when I use the dmesg command to check my boot messages, I get: usb0: register usbnet 001/002, Prolific PL-2301/PL2302 which shows that my kernel is detecting the device correctly. Also, I can create a network interface by typing, as root, ifconfig usb0 10.0.0.1 and, when I type next the ifconfig command all by itself, it shows me that the interface is set up and running. I try ping 10.0.0.1 and it shows me, once again, that the interface is running correctly. On the Windows side, I think installed the driver (that comes on a CD) correctly, even though the "Network Neighborhood" and "PC-Linq" icons, when clicked, show only my father's Windows computer and fails to detect my Linux. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
