I looked at the source code. As far as I can see, that particular combination of error messages can't be generated. The "Could not release interface" message always goes along with "I/O problem", never with "Error updating the port settings". Conversely, "Error updating the port settings" always goes along with either "Could not set config" or "Could not set altsetting". You mentioned before that you upgraded to gphoto2 2.1.6. Did you upgrade to libgphoto2 2.1.6 at the same time? If you didn't, that's your problem.
