That's exactly what I thought.

Do you know if there's some boot parameter to enable this ? I've googled around 
but couldn't find anything. I've never built kernel stuff, so I was kind of 
afraid of taking this path.  But, if there's no other way, perhaps the time has 
come for me to learn these things.

So you think that this may be a 2.6.14 bug which is fixed in 2.6.15-rc3 ?

My sincere thanks, Alan, for taking the time to analyze this. I had posted it 
in a couple of lists but nobody took a chance on it. I filed a bug on Debian 
package 2.6.14-2-686 but I'm not quite sure if it really is a bug.
