Well, if I had not had the problem on both machines with two separate cards, I 
would agree - it wouldn't be the card(s). However, my suspicions are focusing 
on the OS - it's the common denominator.

True, the card was out, but after the damage was down. Erratic mouse behaviour 
-- freezeup - could be something X doesn't like - who knows. In the first 
case machine, the card was still in. I only had the USB 2.0 card and the 
machine had no native USB 1.1 slots.

Bottom-line, so far -- no way I'll stick those cards in until I find out 
what's causing this.
