That's a pretty impressive error. I don't recall ever seeing anything like it. It affected both the high-speed EHCI controller and its full-speed companion UHCI controller. > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux usb-storage: Status code -71; transferred 0/4096 > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux usb-storage: -- unknown error > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux usb-storage: Bulk data transfer result 0x4 > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux usb-storage: -- transport indicates error, resetting > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 3 full speed --> companion > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: GetStatus port 3 status > 003001 POWER OWNER sig=se0 CONNECT > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux hub 1-0:1.0: state 7 ports 6 chg 0000 evt 0002 > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: GetStatus port 1 status > 001020 POWER sig=se0 OCC > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux hub 1-0:1.0: over-current change on port 1 > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 3 full speed --> companion > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: GetStatus port 3 status > 003001 POWER OWNER sig=se0 CONNECT > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 3 full speed --> companion > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: GetStatus port 3 status > 003001 POWER OWNER sig=se0 CONNECT > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 3 full speed --> companion > Aug 19 22:45:05 sioux ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: GetStatus port 3 status > 003001 POWER OWNER sig=se0 CONNECT This isn't just a protocol problem; it's a fault at the hardware level. At a guess, one of the USB controllers on your motherboard has an intermittent short circuit. Or maybe it's in the cable or the GL811E controller. Of course, that doesn't explain why everything works okay on the old 2.4 kernel. Have you tried switch cables or using a different computer?
