In a situation like you have to try lots of variations to find the 
culprit.  Try using a different computer, try using a different hub (or no 
hub at all), try using different cables, try different devices, and so on.

hub.  But that could be an illusion; it's hard to tell.

Sometimes it's impossible to pin the blame on one single piece of
equipment.  I also have a USB hard drive device, which doesn't work on one
of my computers.  If I attach the same cable and drive to a different
computer, they work.  If I switch USB cables on the original computer,
the drive works.  If I keep the computer and cable the same but use a
different USB storage device instead of the hard drive, it works.  In
short, changing any one of the three components fixes the problem -- so
which one is at fault?
