It can indeed be intimidating. But it's also interesting; you might want to try it. The key is to avoid building too many drivers. I gather is off in the stock kernel. It's the simplest way. If your kernel has usbmon and debugfs configured then you can use them instead (see the kernel source file Documentation/usb/usbmon.txt for instructions).
