Ok, it might have something to do with the /proc/bus/usb not loading
properly.

This the same version I'm using, but I'm running on an Intel platform. The
latest version of Gnu C++ I remember seeing is 2.95.2, try that and see how
it goes. That version is classed unstable I think. For more information go
to the linux kernel mail archive search engine:

and do a search on your error, see what comes up.

I prefer the menuconfig, seems to be laid out better.

I understand, I've been there myself a few times. First thing is don't give
up, there must be something you've missed. Just to recap:
You have usbcore and a controller selected? Which controller?

That sounds correct, when you undo the 20Mb tarball you should see it
unpacking source for IA-64, ARM, PPC, i386, etc...
