Ok. So I upgraded gcc:
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/2.95.2/specs
gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)

It has been a pain. First I needed to upgrade my binutils
and then recompile gcc, which now is in a very awkward location. It seems
to work though, and the deveopment tree seems to compile (I have it in another
window eating my processor timeslices ... oh! look! it seems to have finished ;) )

You are right. I think xconfig has a problem with one of the IDE parameters,
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEPCI. I can not define this flag with xconfig, but I
can with menuconfig.
BTW, I tried to manually define this flag in the file .config and after making
make dep, make clean, make zImage I still got stuck in the same spot.
Do you know why?

Right. My cable modem helps a lot here ;)

I recall having heard sth different. But now the 2.3 series compile in my machine
and I will be able to inform you (hopefully in a matter of minutes)

Good to have some support out there.
