One interesting thing was when using usb-uhci, an interrupt with a
status of 2 happened. This means error occured. Some transfer to a
device (most likley the hub) failed.
The patch you created will be a good first step to finding any problems.
I'll create a more permanent patch in case we come across other problems
similar to this in the future.
