I ran make menuconfig and make dep before running make <kernel>. Is that what you mean?

I put these lines in /etc/conf.modules. 

However, when I tried insmod usbcore I got the message that no such module was found.

There are no modules in /lib/modules/<kernel>/usb. Actually the directory doesn't 
exist either. The drivers (or some of them) are in /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb, though.
