Did you redo the config step before building the kernel and select the USB
devices? Do you now see modules under /lib/modules/<kernel>/usb? Ah, just
remembered, if you've got an old modutils you probably need to add the
following lines to /etc/conf.modules (or modules.conf);
keep
path[usb]=/lib/modules/`uname -r`
