This is why I recommend having noauth on the pppd commandline.  This is
how the script is written that comes with linkusb.

First, I have my visor configured PROPERLY, I can transfer files with
pilot-xfer over /dev/ttyUSB1 (like it's supposed to) but the mini-howto
on the visor only says ppp connections are possible over ttyUSB0.
However, mine likes to bring up a login prompt (when connecting from the
visor to the agetty on ttyUSB0, using vt100 emulation) but when I enter
a user name and send a <CR> the terminal stops resonding (visor end) and
never brings up a password prompt, the logs I could pull from my linux
box are saying "blah,blah,blah.... blah, Invalid password for "USERNAME"
and a date.  A PS X tells me its the login is still running on ttyUSB0,
so I kill that process and try a second time after the agetty respawns,
but the second time, I get no prompt on the visor, and my linux box
locks up (not even SysReq works) causing me to <POST>
