I assume that your printer is not the stc740, which is AFIK the only EPSON
printer that just prints if you send a job via USB. All other EPSON printers
need an initialization string that probably connects the interpreter with
the USB device. 

If ou are using the uniprint driver with Ghostscript you can find more 
information at http://www1.webnik.ne.jp/~beat-a/LinuxEpson.html 

The Gimp Print Plugin (or the derived stp Ghostscript driver) does send this
string with every job.
