That depends on how risky you are and how important your
machine's contents are (or that you have current backups).

I've used 2.3 for over one year now, without serious problems,
but some people do have problems with it from time to time.
If you decide to go that route, you should get 2.4.0-test4,
not 2.3.99.

However, I'm sure that there are people out there who
are successfully using the backport patch to 2.2.16.
I just checked my 2.2.16 "vmlinux" file and it has the
'daemonize' symbol in it.  Maybe you should check yours
to verify that the symbol is there: nm vmlinux | grep daemonize
and then verify that you are actually running that kernel.
