Ah, this is what I have:
        $ git --version
        git version 1.8.3.rc0.20.gb99dd2e

which is a bit out of date, I need to go update...

Yes, probably.

I'd recommend the same thing that Linus says for all kernel developers
to do, run the latest version of git.  You can easily just clone the git
tree and run 'make && make install' to get a local copy of git in your
personal directory.  That way, we are all using the latest stuff (like
signed tags), and people (like me), don't get confused any more than
normal :)
